The term "Early Music" was coined in the mid-20th century to describe a particular approach to medieval, Renaissance and Baroque music -- the "roots" of much of western classical music. The field focuses on performance informed by the music's cultural and historical context, including the use of period instruments, and spans a thousand years of music ranging from plainchant to madrigals, from Baroque chamber music to early Latin American music. |
CEMA's Role in the Lubbock Community |

In the past half-century, the Early Music or "Historical Performance" movement has expanded its audience, and almost all most major cities in the U.S. support an Early Music concert series or presenting organization. Yet until now, there has been no presenting organization or service organization in West Texas to recognize, present, popularize, and support this wonderful music. CEMA's goals are:
- to provide international-caliber early music outreach and performances to the communities of Lubbock, West Texas, and the Southwest;
- to provide performance opportunities in West Texas to student, local, national and international early music performers;
- to provide educational materials and presentations about music from the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque eras in Europe, North America and Latin America.
While West Texas has a rich musical legacy in the realm of American popular music, it has been traditionally underserved in the area of chamber music. CEMA's concert presentations and educational outreach events will address this lacking. Your support for CEMA will help us realize our mission of bringing world-class early music performances and educational programs to Lubbock, thus enriching the artistic and cultural life of our community. |
